An architectural shingle is an assembly

Shingle roofing here means architectural shingles: the laminated, dimensional shingles used on houses, plus every layer that has to be right before those shingles mean anything. Starter at the eaves and rakes, hip and ridge caps, valleys, drip edge, underlayment, and pipe boots are the roof. The shingle is the surface. Buying the surface and treating the rest as leftovers is how a new roof unbuttons at the first hard wind or leaks at the first pipe.

Three-tab shingles are a flatter, lighter product. They are not described as architectural, and they are not swapped in to make a bid look cheaper while the paperwork still says architectural. Starter is not a flipped field shingle

The eave is where wind gets under the roof and where water leaves. Starter puts sealant at that edge and covers the joints of the first course. It runs the eaves and the rakes. Cutting tabs off a field shingle and nailing it upside down often puts the sealant in the wrong place or leaves a thin edge that curls.

The scope calls for starter made for the shingle system. It is installed straight. A wavy starter shows up as a wavy first course, and you will look at that line every time you pull into the driveway. At the eave it works with the drip edge so water gets off the fascia. At the rake it locks the edge the same way. Skipping the rake starter because "nobody sees the side" is how the side becomes the piece that peels.

Hips and ridges take more weather than the field

Hip and ridge caps cover the breaks where two slopes meet. Wind and water hit them from more than one direction. They are not leftover field shingles with a rough cut, and they are not a bundle of three-tab from another job unless that cap is actually the product specified with the field. The caps have to be fastened in the zone the covering will hide, bedded so they seal, and run in a line that does not wander off the hip.

A hip roof has more cap and more valley than a gable. That is more work, not a reason to thin it. A ridge vent is cut and wrapped so the cap does not dam the slot or pour rain into the opening. A loose cap over a raw hole is an intake for rain.

Pipe boots die before the shingles do

The rubber collar on a pipe boot sits in full sun on the south and west slopes. In this county it cracks, splits, and shrinks years before an architectural shingle is used up. On a replacement, every boot is new. Reusing a soft collar because it still stretches over the pipe is how the new roof leaks in the only place the homeowner can see from the bathroom ceiling.

Lead boots hold up better in the sun and they are a material choice, not a secret upgrade to hide in the bid. The scope names the boot. The flange gets woven into the shingles so the uphill portion is under the course above, not face-nailed and caulked. A boot that is painted, taped, or stuffed with roof cement is a repair that was never finished. If the field shingles are also brittle, new boots alone will not save the slope.

Nails belong in the line the shingle gives you

Nails go in the zone printed on the shingle, driven flush. Nails above that zone are barely covered, and wind lifts the tab. Nails too low show through the face. High nailing is a common reason a young roof unbuttons, and you cannot see it from the ground until it does.

Fastener count follows the shingle and the wind design on the permit for that site. The crew nails the roof the permit describes, not a coastal sheet pasted onto an inland house and not a roof nailed as if wind stopped at the coast.

Attic ventilation is checked at the replacement

A shingle roof over a hot, closed attic ages from below as well as from the sun. At replacement, check soffit intake and whether it is actually open. Insulation packed into the eaves is the usual find on older ranches. A ridge vent with no intake pulls from can lights and bath fans instead of from outside.

Bath fans that end in the attic wet the new deck. That is not a shingle defect. A powered fan can pull air down a ridge vent and defeat both openings. The path is outside air in at the eaves and out at the top. If the soffits cannot be opened, that limit is said before the color is chosen. A metal roof does not skip this check.

Valleys, oaks, and the dark streaks

Live oaks drop leaves into valleys for a long season. A valley full of wet leaves will push water sideways under the shingles even when the metal is right. An open metal valley can be cleaned. That choice is made at replacement, and it matters more under a canopy than on a roof in the open. Cleaning a valley is maintenance the owner keeps doing. Leaves are not a defect in the shingles.

Dark streaks in this humidity are usually algae. They are cosmetic. Pressure washing strips granules. A wash is not a new roof and it is not a leak repair. Water inside is still a flashing, a boot, a valley, or the deck.

A new house is not the same shingle job as a tear-off

On a new house the shingles land on a fresh deck, and the roof is dried in before the interior is trusted. That sequence sits with residential construction. A storm on an open frame is not the same day as a tear-off on an occupied house. Starter, caps, boots, and soffit air still apply.

A shingle maker’s paper is not the contractor’s workmanship agreement, and this page states neither term. The roofing decision still comes first. If the pitch is wrong for shingles, the honest product may be metal or, on a low-slope building, not a shingle at all.
